Clinical Psychologist

BA (UCT), Hons (Stellenbosch). MA Clin Psych (Stellenbosch), PhD Clin Psych (Stellenbosch)
Rondebosch

Special Interest : I enjoy working with both adults and adolescents who may be experiencing situational, behavioural or emotional problems which are having a negative impact on their lives. These include depression, anxiety, relational and personality difficulties and the stress inherent in the transition from one life stage to another. I have worked in the medical environment for many years in an allied health profession, so find it particularly satisfying to work in the areas where mental and physical health intersect. I am particularly interested in women’s mental health as well as support for individuals who have either acute or chronic medical problems which are impacting on their ability to engage fully with life and their own physical processes.

Dr Gillian Graham
Counselling psychologist

BA (Hons). MA. PhD (UCT)
4 Bath Street
Gardens
Cape Town

Special Interest : My particular interest is working with individuals going through transitions which threaten to overwhelm their usually successful coping skills. These can include divorce, ill-health, bereavement, retrenchment or retirement, but also, unexpectedly, such events as adjusting to married life, or becoming a parent.

When I started my practice, long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy was possible as most people belonged to medical aids that had generous benefits. That is no longer the case, psychotherapists today often work within serious constraints of their clients’ budgets, and that requires short-term therapeutic approaches.

Special Interest : Thank you for viewing my profile.

Choosing a therapist can feel stressful and a little overwhelming! Sometimes one just needs to trust ones instinct and take the first step - without hoping for complete information at the beginning.

There is a saying that ’the path only opens up when the journey begins...’ If it is any consolation, choosing a therapist can sometimes be the hardest part of the entire process!

As a therapist I work with ordinary individuals and couples who have ordinary problems, although at times these problems can result in a feeling of being in a crisis.

In response to these life and mental health challenges, I try to provide a safe, compassionate and containing space in which you might be able to transform your life and your relationships - rather than simply ’putting them back together again’.

One of the ways in which I attempt to do this is by assisting you to find the ’True North’ of your life and your relationships - in other words the ’meaning and purpose’ that will allow you to overcome the obstacles that may currently feel insurmountable.

As the client I will also gently encourage you to try to hold your life, relationships and difficulties a little more lightly, and in the therapy space we will also work together to integrate both ones ’acceptable’ as well as ones ’unacceptable’ selves, even if this sometimes means speaking the ’unspeakable’.

I try to work fairly quickly and consistently request feedback regarding how the therapy is progressing, as well as engaging on an ongoing basis with ’difficult’ issues such as affordability and when to end the therapy.

Special Interest : Are you feeling stuck in your life, overwhelmed by intense feelings, perhaps doubting and judging of yourself or struggling with your relationships?

Do you want to become more conscious of yourself and what is happening in your life?

I offer a gentle and safe space for you to enquire into the difficulties you are experiencing. I want to help you to know yourself better, understand how life events have impacted and shaped you, to be more aware of your feelings, thoughts and sensations.
I would like to encourage you to treat yourself with respect, to take care of your needs, to have empathy for your struggles.
I want to help you to find inner space in the midst of challenge, to be able to take a breath when life seems overwhelming, to step back and see the bigger picture before reacting in unhelpful ways. This will enable you to act with more choice and grace in difficult situations.
