hi, does anyone actually know where we can apply for psychometrics or career counselling internships. University has been unhelpful and HPCSA don't seem able to actually reply to any requests for a list (or to actually answer their phones)... perhaps my timing is just bad or i'm really unlucky but surely finding places to apply shouldn't be so impossible?

Hi I258,

I am having the same problem. Finished my Psych (Hons) and now trying to find a place to do my psychometry internship down in Durban. It can get so frustrating...I've also tried contacting the HPCSA without success and the few private organisations I've contacted never bother to get back to you.

Have you tried getting a hold of a UNISA near you, as they do the career counselng internship there and I think they are starting to interview new interns this month?

I managed to get a response from one of the people at the HPCSA with regards to a possible list of institutions down in Durban offering Psychometry internships....Apparently they "don't have a list of institutions offering psychometry internship".

Very frustrating trying to find somewhere to go !!!

MrDrew... I also got told there "is no list"... wonder how they check if institutions are accredited if they don't have a list of one's previously accredited... Applied for Career Counselling Internship and never heard back, have previously applied for peer helper programmes and tutor and UNISA and never heard back from them either... apparently straight A's are not good enough to be a peer helper or tutor... not sure what to actually do about this anymore

Tell me about it !!

I managed to get hold of someone from UKZN to ask about their career/psychometry internships, and they reckon you need to have your Masters before you can register with them.

SO....Unisa supposedly lets you do an internship with only an Honours degree...UKZN says you need a Masters degree.....and yet at the end of the 6-month internship, everyone writes the same Board exam. I honestly don't think anyone knows what they are doing !!!

And as for HPCSA not having a list, I agree with you completely...they must have some kind of data base to keep a record of who is accredited or not.

I must have sent out at least a hundred queries (government departments, private institutions, Universities, Organisations) with no luck. Don't know what to do next

UKZN are a bit confused... (I think - you never know with how quickly things change) but according to the HPCSA you need an honours degree, six month internship and board exams...

I'm pretty sure something needs to be done about the general confusion/lack of data base/lack of consistency issue... until then I guess we'll all just have to try not to despair... Perhaps this is why psychologists and psychology students are advised to go into therapy - not for self-exploration but to deal with frustration...

Ukzn internships are only offered for Intern psychologist, thus the comment about needing a masters and not registered counsellors. The board exam for psychologist and registered counsellor is different.

Having done both I Know the fustration. I work at a school and would be willing to create an intership post for registered counsellors in the Durban area.

Hi Macca,

That would be brilliant if you could create an internship post at your school  would you be willing to create a career counseling position or a psychometry position?

Hi, I also have my Psych Honours and live in Durban. I have been checking the Unisa website for the career counselling internship, but haven't seen any adverts yet.

Hi,

So glad to have found this website.

My name is Joanne and I am presently completing my honours in psychology through UNISA.  I write my final exams in Oct/Nov this year.  I have missed applications for Masters in Clinical Psychology for 2011 as I got conflicting advice and information about the procedures for applications

I do not want to waste a year and I thought that I could go the trauma counselling route next year, where you do a 6 month internship and then write the board exam for registered counselor and get some experience.  Please could someone advise where I could get an internship as a counsellor or the procedure to follow.  Pleeease!!!

Thanks.  Looking forward to receiving your responses.

I am also having great difficulties trying to find a
placement for counseling. Most of the replies I get
include 'we cannot accept you as you do not have
masters'. If I find any places where people do actually
still value honours, I will let you know.
