Hi there
I am currently finishing my honours degree and need to embark on a psychometry internship for 6 months so as to register with the HPCSA. I am finding it extremely difficult to have anyone reply or give any assistance with regards to a possible internship.
If anyone can assist or guide me as to where i can enquire please give me a shout.

Hi Candy,
I'm not sure if you've been able to find any information since you posted your query, so I hope this is not repetition.
I have just completed my 6 month psychometric internship through a course, accredited by the HPCSA, at the University of Johannesburg. I'm not sure of any other universities offering this independent course (since the HPCSA regulations have changed twice over the last few years). But if you would like any further information regarding this, let me know, and I can send you the details of the course co-ordinator.

I completed my Honours 8 years ago (not sure what the implications will be) after which I did my Degree in HR. Really want to certify as a psychometrist too! Where are you situated? You can do it through the University of Johannesburg, otherwise if you do it through UNISA you have to find your own placement and they will be the supervising body.

Hi Adolf.
Unisa have to place you. they don't act as an supervising body anymore. so you are wasting your time to find a placement of your own. unisa is only placing 25 interns per year.they are already full for this year AND NEXT year. unbelievable! Try Johannesburg University. Please let me know the correct way to go through Joburg university. I contacted them. but never heard anything from them.

Hi everyone
Okay, basically, when you are out there with your registration in hand, you are going to have to fight your way for work, network, tender etc. Finding an internship is your first step. Not an easy one, but not impossible. I think I sent out over 100 'begging' packages before I got lucky. You just have to get onto the internet, contact PSYSSA, SHL and other psychometric companies, colleges, unversities, and speak to people who might have contacts. Ask UNISA for a list of previous companies that offered internship posts - they have to give you the information. HPCSA have a list of intern possibiliites. They gave me a 20 pager and I posted to all of those in the Western Cape.
Sorry, but nothing in life comes easy - you have to get off the couch and go a-begging. The rest is a piece of old takkie:) I have asked the HPCSA if I can take on interns, so hopefully I can help a couple of people. I am also putting a programme together, so email me on careers.smith@gmail.com and give me your details - I will let you know what is possible.
Good luck guys - don't give up - see yourself as psychometrists - if you can dream it, you can do it!

I need help and advice to anyone who can assist me as to how to go about this process. I have studied psychology from undergrad till Masters Level from the University of Pretoria and I specialised in Research Psychology for my masters as I was still very young at the time to be considered for counselling or clinical psychology. In 2007 I went on to do my masters internship at Edcon group where I was focusing on psychological assessments and organisational development. After completing I started work in research in NGO’s and delayed completing my dissertation and only graduated last year (2010) I went to the HPCSA to enquire about board exams dates, I was told that I do not qualify to write the exam as my time has lapsed and I have to redo an internship again. I initially took the news very hard and decided that I would rather focus on social and behavioural research as a career but I cannot at all and I have decided that I do not want to pursue a career that I am not happy about because of circumstances and would rather focus on what I know would certainly bring me fulfilment. I have been trying to apply for jobs within the fields of Assessments, Organisational development and HR without any luck and have now decided to do an internship in psychometric s but I have been struggling to get places where I can apply. My other concern is that I’m currently the bread winner as my husband is not permanently employed and I can’t afford to totally loose an income. I therefore would like to know if I can complete an internship part time or are there any other means within which a person can be able to complete a psychometric internship whilst earning an income at the same time. I’m very desperate to do this as I have realised that I cannot keep doing research, its bringing too much strain and self-doubt rather career fulfilment and contentment.
Can anyone please help me with any information that could be valuable to me in any way I would really appreciate it.

As far as I know one can complete a psychometric internship over 6months full-time or 12 months part-time according to the HPCSA docs. If you have completed your BA(Hons) Psychology you can apply for a psychometric internship with UNISA (contact Ms Meyer). I have also really battled to get any info from both the HPCSA and UNISA regarding internship requirements etc, but I have a document from UNISA with most of the detail and should be able to answer some of your questions. Let me know if you'd like me to mail it to you. Yes, I totally agree, just not worth sacrificing career fulfillment and so important to be happy in your work and passionate about what you do!

Hi Gillian
Could you possibly mail the document from UNISA to
me? I completed HONS in Industrial Psychology and it
is such a challenge to find a supervisory institution for
psychometric internships. Do you have any
information regarding the programme offered by UJ? I
am a member of SAPS in the ECape and will be
transferring to our Psychological Services Unit where I
will be surrounded by trained proffessionals.

Will send you all the info I have from UJ as well as UNISA. UNISA is not offering an internship at this stage - as far as I know their accredidation to supervise an internship has been revoked by the HPCSA and they are in the process of restructuring the B.Psych equivalent degree.
I will send you the info and contact person of info I received from the industrial psych. dept at UNISA.

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct topic, but
was just wondering if someone could give me more
information on psychometry in South Africa? What
exactly is the path one has to take in order to
become a psychometrist in SA. I am currently studying
a masters in psych in Austria, whereby psychometry is

The rules for Psychometry have changed a few times, so there remains a cloud of mystery, unfortunately.
To register successfully as a Psychometrist, you need to have completed your Honours degree in Psychology at an ACCREDITED university with an ACCREDITED course. You then need to register with a university for them to oversee your internship - you will also need to do a practicum under a supervisor in conjunction with the university. Your supervisor needs to be a registered psychologist or psychometrist - registered for 3 or more years - and has to be approved by the university and the HPCSA. Registering as an intern psychometrist is imperative.
Once the university has signed off your internship (the supervisor needs to have written a couple of reports during this time, detailing your experience), you will be given permission to write the board exam. It is quite a process and I think an important one.
Before you embark on this plan however, I would strongly suggest to all that are reading this post - do your homework on the cost of accreditation for the most popular tests as well as the cost of test material. Visit the various test publisher and agencies such as SHL, Jopie van Rooyen, Cognadev, Thomas International, Psytech, Mindmuzik, Saville consulting, etc - you will need capital to set up unless you are lucky enough to secure an internship that offers training and accreditation.
Many internships are unpaid or only offer a small stipend, so if you need to earn while you learn, you will need to be selective about your application. If you are happy to do your internship unpaid and do some extra admin etc for your supervisor, you may find it easier to secure one.
Interns must also understand that supervisors spend a vast amount of extra time going over reports, teaching, coaching and mentoring through the process and there is no incentive to take an intern on, such as CPD points. If a supervisor does offer assistance, embrace it and enjoy it - go the extra mile for your supervisor, work hard and do as much as you can - include report writing as much as you can as this forms a large part of your end practice.
I would also suggest, to work for a company before embarking on your own private practice. But, if you do start out on your own rather, then do it right from the beginning.
Jobs are scarce - so research availability of work etc. For some, it may be better to do a counselling internship first and then the psychometry.
I hope this helps all those that are busy thinking about what to do with your honours degree. Please do your homework first and then make your final decision.
It is a fantastic qualification, with loads of potential to some - for others, it is difficult to break into the market - especially without start-up capital.
I am prepared to take on someone from the Helderberg region (Somerset West, Gordon's Bay, Strand / Stellenbosch. However, it would be an unpaid internship.

Thank you for the information Susan...I've been doing
some research and the field is becoming a little
clearer for me and even more interesting.
As it turns out I have a friend who works for a
psychometrist who readily employs interns so it looks
like I may just be in luck there.
What did you mean when you wrote "do your
homework on the cost of accreditation for the most
popular tests as well as the cost of test material".
What does one have to get accreditation for?
